ART QUILTS WITH DIGITAL FABRIC taught by Lura Schwarz Smith

For this section of the class, students will explore design possibilities for producing art quilts. Digital fabrics we print with our own images are an exciting new type of fabric for quilters, and how to incorporate these with other fabrics in interesting ways will be a focus. We will use various art materials on our textiles (on the digital fabrics if enhancement is desired, as well as on other fabrics you bring) using textile markers, pens, inks, paints and colored pencils. We will be constructing a small wall top using a variety of techniques, including free-form paperless machine curved piecing. For those who do not wish to bring or rent a sewing machine for piecing techniques, you will do fusing or hand piecing.

WHAT YOU NEED for the ART QUILTS WITH DIGITAL FABRIC

We will be learning to ink, draw and paint as desired to enhance our digitally printed fabrics. Class inks, markers, paints, oil pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils will be provided for sharing in the workshop, but you may bring your own if you have them and wish to do so. If you wish to purchase any of the Tsukineko inks, Fantastix applicators and Fabrico textile markers I use, you may purchase them at www.jukeboxquilts.com. This is OPTIONAL.

Sewing machine and basic sewing machine kit if desired

  • Fusible if desired for appliqué and construction process
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Paper and fabric scissors
  • Pencil and paper
  • Extension cord
  • Any textile inks, markers, paints, or Prismacolor pencils you may have (optional)
  • FABRICS: at least 3 non-precious fabrics for the free-form piecing exercises, if you have not done this technique and wish to learn: approximately a fat quarter of each. Bring other fabrics in colors and textures that will suit the photos you plan to work with. Variety is the goal – scraps are fine. Finished top will be wall sized, so richness of choice in small amounts is best.
